Fiona had been looking for more funeral directors with shady pasts, but no one seemed quite as perfect as Paul Jensen. It had been an hour, and Fiona still hadnât heard from Jake, but she hoped he was okay. She wasnât even sure why she was worryingâhe was the FBI agent, and the one whoâd saved her life. He was a strong, capable man, and definitely didnât need her worrying about him.
Still, it was in her nature.
A sudden knock at the door broke Fionaâs reverie, and she stood up from her table and went to the door, expecting to see Jake. But when she opened it, it was Lauren standing on the other side with an ice-cold expression. The moment Lauren saw Fiona, she pushed past her, into her room. âIs Jake here?â
Okay, I guess everyone can just burst into my room, Fiona thought bitterly. âNo, he isnât,â she said. âHe went to interrogate a suspect.â
âShit,â Lauren muttered. âThatâs why he didnât answer my call. Heâs probably talking to the guy now.â
Silence spread between them. Fiona didnât know what to say. But she recalled Jake mentioning that Lauren was talking to a suspect too.
âHow did yours go?â Fiona asked timidly. Around Lauren, she felt like she was walking on glass, afraid to say the wrong thing.
âDead end,â Lauren said shortly, crossing her arms. âI did find one thing out, though. All three of the women have been on dating apps over the past several months.â
Dating apps. Fiona suddenly remembered that she still had a profile up, and the thought mortified her. She hadnât opened it to see if she had any messages, and hadnât activated push notifications. If one of her colleagues saw that, she would be horrified.
But dating apps were very common these days. Fiona wondered what Lauren was thinking, so she asked, âDo you think the killer is meeting them on there?â
âItâs possible,â Lauren said. âAll three girls were officially single. A lot of these dating apps work by deleting messages after a certain period of time, and apparently once theyâre gone, theyâre gone for good. Makes our lives a bit harder, and itâs something Iâve had to deal with before.â
Fiona nodded. Surely, Lauren had dealt with many things in her time as an agent. Fiona wasnât sure if Lauren was even three years older than herâprobably twenty-eight or twenty-nine, while Fiona was twenty-sixâbut Lauren exuded an air of experience, like she was much older.
âAnother issue,â Lauren said, âis that the girls used a lot of different dating apps. Some of them were removed from their phones. Itâs hard to trackâthere are so many of those stupid things these days.â
Fionaâs cheeks warmed, and she bowed her head. âThatâs true.â
âIâm still trying to get access to what I can,â Lauren said, âbut we need subpoenas. This dating angle seems to be the best lead we have.â
Fiona didnât want to overstep, but she felt like the funeral director angle was strongerâespecially with Paul Jensen being such a prime suspect. She
